'But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.'
John 6:20
Greetings in the wonderful and powerful name of Jesus.
In a world filled with uncertainty, the only true and lasting comfort we can find is in Jesus. Well-meaning people may say, "Do not be afraid, I am with you," but too often, their words prove meaningless when true tribulation arrives.
The powerful declaration from John 6:20, "It is I; be not afraid," can only be made by one person—the one who is capable of doing exceedingly and abundantly above all that we can ask or think: Jesus.

The Risk of Journeying Without Christ

Consider the story in John 6:17-21.
The disciples embarked on a journey across the sea without Jesus, and as they set out, darkness was falling. The way the Bible records this detail underscores the great risk of journeying without Christ.

How often do we do the same? We trust in our own strength and power (Psalm 20:7), only remembering to call upon our Maker when we are exhausted.
What forgetful Christians we can be!

As darkness fell, a great storm arose, creating a dire situation. The storms of life are inevitable, but the Bible calls those who build their house upon the solid rock "wise." (Matthew 7:24-27) They are wise because they understand the profound risk of building on sand, knowing the storms will come. Only a foundation anchored in Christ can weather the storms of life unshaken.

A life without Christ leaves us utterly vulnerable.

His Presence That Calms Every Storm

But in the midst of their tempest, Jesus appeared, walking majestically upon the very waves that threatened to sink them—a man to whom the storm must listen. He said, "It is I; do not be afraid." (John 6:20)

This single statement fulfills all the promises of our Lord:
"I am with you always" (Matthew 28:20),
"I have overcome the world" (John 16:33),
and "I will not leave you as orphans" (John 14:18).
These declarations from our faithful Lord calm every storm in our hearts. We can have full confidence that He is faithful and just to keep His word.
Your Choice in the Storm

There are two kinds of storms we can witness in life: one with Jesus and one without Him. Our survival and our peace depend solely on our decision to invite Him in. This is why Colossians 1:27 is so vital: "Christ in you, the hope of glory." We lose our hope the very moment we lose sight of Jesus.

Did you notice what happened immediately after the disciples welcomed Jesus into their boat? They arrived at their destination. They arrived because they joyfully accepted His presence. Just as Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us, the hope of reaching an expected end is found in Jesus alone.

My Lord and my Savior, I thank you for reminding me that you have never left me.
Today, I joyfully accept you into the boat of my life. Come and steer me to the destination you have predestined for me.

Calm every storm I face and help me to build my confidence in you alone. Amen.
