In the quiet moments after breakfast by the sea, Jesus posed a question to Peter that echoes through the life of every believer today. It is a question of priority and placement.
So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ΓÇ£Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?ΓÇ¥ He said to Him, ΓÇ£Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.ΓÇ¥ He said to him, "Feed My lambs.ΓÇ¥' John 21:15
This verse presents a profound equation: Love versus These. The way we answer this determines whether we are walking in our divine purpose or merely drifting into survival mode. Peter serves as our mirror here. His story is not just a historical account but a spiritual blueprint for those of us who feel the tug of the world pulling us away from our calling. To understand the depth of this moment, we have to look back at where the sifting began.
The Sifting and the Strategy
In Luke 22, Jesus pulls back the curtain on the spiritual warfare surrounding Peter's life.
'And the Lord said, ΓÇ£Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.ΓÇ¥' Luke 22:31-32
Jesus was very specific. The enemy was interested in Peter because heaven was interested in Peter. The sifting was not random. It was a targeted strike intended to break his faith. Yet, within that warning was a prophecy: ΓÇ£When you have returned.ΓÇ¥ Jesus already knew Peter would stumble, but He also knew the strength Peter would gain from that restoration would be the very thing his brothers needed to survive their own journeys.
Have you ever wondered why you face the same persistent struggles? Why do certain habits or sins seem to flare up just when you are getting closer to God? These distractions are often spiritual manipulations designed to frustrate your consecration. The enemy wants to exhaust you until you decide to abandon your post in the house of God.
The Trap of Survival Mode
The purpose God has for you is generational. It is designed to produce fruit that others will eat for years to come. When you step out of that purpose, you do not just affect yourself; you affect everyone meant to be strengthened by your testimony.
In John 21, we see Peter in a vulnerable state. He had experienced the trauma of the crucifixion and his own denial of Christ. Feeling lost, he reverted to what he knew best before he ever met Jesus.
'Simon Peter said to them, ΓÇ£I am going fishing.ΓÇ¥ They said to him, ΓÇ£We are going with you also.ΓÇ¥ They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. ' John 21:3
This is the danger of a leader in survival mode. When Peter said, ΓÇ£I am going fishing,ΓÇ¥ he led his brothers away from their calling and back to their old lives. This mirrors their first meeting in Luke 5. Just like that day, they labored all night and caught nothing.
When we sacrifice our love for Christ for the sake of ΓÇ£theseΓÇ¥ (the worldly desires, the pursuit of money, or the need for security) we find ourselves toiling in vain. We seek what God has already promised to provide while neglecting the very kingdom work we were created for.
Returning to the First Love
Jesus did not leave them toiling in the dark. He came looking for His sheep. He saw them struggling to make ends meet and reminded them that He is the source of all supply.
Are you currently busy surviving, grieving, or complaining about scarcity? Are you ΓÇ£fishingΓÇ¥ in waters that God already told you to leave? It is time to stop the cycle of empty nets. The world is eagerly waiting for the manifestation of the sons and daughters of God. To sabotage your spiritual growth is to leave a world in hunger.
Jesus is asking you today: Do you love me enough to let go of your personal ambition and your past? Do you love me more than your desire for comfort?
It does not matter how far you think you have wandered. You can return to the divine blueprint of evangelism and service. If your love has grown cold, you can reignite it right now.
If you want to return to your first love, pray this with me:
Lord Jesus, I come to You today. Forgive me for my sins and wash me in the precious blood of the Lamb. Write my name in the Book of Life. Help me to leave my old ways behind and reign with You eternally. I choose Your purpose over my survival. In Jesus' mighty name I have prayed. Amen.
